Hi, I’m Laura.

The Sprout House grew out of my love of growing food — but I definitely didn’t start out knowing how to do it.

In April 2020, my husband and I build a vegetable garden at our home in Gray, Maine.

We were home during the pandemic, needed a project to keep our minds busy during a difficult time. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing.

We filled our new raised beds with fresh soil, put some plants in, watered them and hoped for the best.

Somehow, that first garden did pretty well!

The next year was a completely different story.

I didn’t understand the importance of replenishing the soil or fertilizing. My plants struggled, pests ate everything and the most frustrating part was that I didn’t know why.

Then life got busy, we had a new baby and the garden took a back seat for a while. When I eventually came back to it, I was determined to figure out what I was doing wrong. I started asking questions — lots of them.

Little by little, I realized that the garden was giving me information. It was actually telling me exactly what it needed. I had to learn to listen.

Somewhere in the process of figuring it out, I completely fell in love with gardening.

The Sprout House Today

My curiosity quickly grew beyond the summer garden.

By February, I was longing to grow something even though we were living in a winter wonderland which led me to start my own seedlings indoors.

Now my gardening season begins as early as January, starting plants indoors under grow lights before eventually moving them to my greenhouse and finally, to the garden.

I love the entire process— choosing varieties, starting seeds, hardening seedlings, building healthy soil, composting, succession planting, harvesting and learning something new every season.

I even raise red wiggler composting worms, whose castings make their way back into my seed starting mix and client gardens.

That curiosity and remembering how discouraging gardening once felt is ultimately what led to The Sprout House.

I want to make gardening more understandable.

I can help plan your garden, grow the seedlings for it, plant it with you, teach you how to care for it, work alongside you as you learn or step in and help with life gets busy.

Growing Together

One of the things I care most about is getting children involved in growing food.

Some of my favorite summer moments are watching my own children run to the garden looking for green beans or pulling a fresh cucumber off the plant and eating the whole thing right there.

They’ve been willing to taste things from our garden that they might never have tried from a grocery store simply because they watched it grow and picked it themselves. One day my 5 year old was unsure about trying a purple green bean from my garden. Eventually, she decided to give it a try. It was such a small thing, but I remember thinking that she probably never would have tried that strange looking bean if she hadn’t watched it grow and picked it from our own garden. The process of growing food at home made it feel less scary to try.

I want kids to understand that food starts with soil, seeds, water, sunshine, patience and listening to what the plant is trying to tell you.

So when I work with a family, children are genuinely welcome to join us.

They can plant a seedling, investigate a bug, pick a vegetable and ask a hundred questions.

You don’t have to become an expert gardener to have a gorgeous thriving garden. You can learn everything you can, have me work beside you, or simply enjoy watering and harvesting while I help with the rest.

There isn’t one correct way to garden.

The goal is to create one that works for your life and hopefully grow some really good food along the way.
